Morning Commute Overview

St. Louis commuters should prepare for a challenging morning and afternoon drive this Wednesday, March 11, 2026. A combination of a significant storm system and ongoing major highway infrastructure projects is expected to cause localized flooding and heavy congestion across the metro area.

Major Highway Construction and Closures

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has several active work zones that will impact travel times today:

  • I-55 (South City/County): The massive bridge rehabilitation project continues to restrict flow. Drivers can expect only one southbound lane open from I-44 to north of Bates and restricted lane counts through Weber Road. Key ramps at Virginia, Loughborough, Germania, and the Lafayette/Truman interchange remain closed.
  • Route 21 (St. Louis County): Single-lane closures are scheduled in both directions between Green Park and Gravois Road, as well as segments near Reavis Barracks and Suson Hills, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.
  • I-270 (North County): The westbound exit and on-ramps at Riverview Drive remain closed as part of the Chain of Rocks bridge project. Expect narrowed lanes and shifts near the I-64 interchange due to ongoing bridge replacement work over Conway Road.
  • Route 370 (Discovery Bridge): Lane shifts are in effect across the Missouri River. Motorists should anticipate two-lane configurations in both directions through the work zone.

Weather Impacts on Road Conditions

Meteorologists are tracking a 100 percent chance of precipitation for the St. Louis region today. Widespread rain is expected to reach peak intensity during the morning and evening rush hours. Commuters should be alert for standing water on low-lying sections of I-64 and I-70, particularly near the downtown interchanges. Visibility will be significantly reduced, and the Poplar Street Bridge is expected to experience heavier-than-usual bottlenecks due to the wet conditions.

Public Transit and Metro Alerts

Metro Transit reports that MetroLink and MetroBus services are currently operating on their regular weekday schedules. However, passengers should be aware that minor schedule adjustments for 26 MetroBus routes are set to take effect next week, on March 16. For today, commuters are encouraged to use the Transit app for real-time tracking, as heavy surface street traffic may cause minor delays for bus routes operating through the South City and I-55 corridors. Transit riders should also allow extra time for walking to stations due to the steady rainfall forecast throughout the day.
