Significant Roadwork on the I-55 Corridor

Commuters and weekend travelers should prepare for ongoing construction impacts along Interstate 55 this Saturday, February 14, 2026. The multi-year I-55 Bridge Rehabilitation project remains a primary factor for North-South travel. Crews are currently focused on the final stages of bridge work and resurfacing between I-44 in the city and Lindbergh Boulevard in South County. While major daily lane closures have been scaled back recently, drivers can still expect narrowed lanes and periodic shifts between River Des Peres and Loughborough Avenue. Nightly resurfacing is also scheduled to continue through the summer, which may lead to lane restrictions for those heading home late from Valentine’s Day celebrations.

Further south in Jefferson County, the I-55 expansion project is in full swing. Work to add a third lane in both directions between Route Z and U.S. 67 is causing significant traffic pattern changes near Pevely and Festus. Motorists are advised to watch for a specific ramp closure that began Friday night: the northbound U.S. 67 loop ramp to northbound I-55. While work is primarily overnight, residual equipment movement may affect early morning traffic on Saturday.

MetroLink Maintenance and Transit Updates

For those planning to use public transit to avoid road congestion, MetroLink is currently operating under a single-track schedule near Union Station. This is part of a long-term tunnel maintenance initiative expected to last through 2028. Red Line and Blue Line passengers should anticipate delays of approximately 5 to 10 minutes, especially when transferring at the Forest Park-DeBaliviere Station. Transit officials recommend allowing at least 20 minutes of extra travel time for cross-county trips.

Additionally, the Secure Platform Plan infrastructure is now largely in place across the system. While most security gates are operational, riders may encounter transit security teams at station entrances for fare verification as the new contactless revenue system continues its region-wide rollout. Construction at the East Riverfront station is also nearing its final phases, with minor platform restrictions possible.

Valentine's Day Surge and Local Arteries

Beyond highway construction, a surge in local traffic is expected starting late Saturday afternoon. Heavy congestion is anticipated in the Central West End, Soulard, and Downtown near the Enterprise Center and Busch Stadium areas. If you are traveling to a dinner reservation or event, consider using parallel arteries like Forest Park Parkway or Chouteau Avenue to avoid the busiest I-64 interchanges. Minor sign replacement work is also occurring along I-64 between the Poplar Street Bridge and I-170, though this is largely restricted to the shoulders and should not cause significant delays for daytime commuters.
