Navy namesake visit combines community service, civic meetings, and student outreach

Six sailors assigned to the U.S. Navy’s USS St. Louis are in St. Louis this week for a namesake visit that includes volunteer work, meetings with city leaders and outreach to local students. The visit is scheduled to last three days and is built around a set of public-facing events intended to connect the ship’s crew with the community the vessel is named for.

Workday at North Grand site focuses on veteran housing initiative

The crew’s first morning in the city was spent at the Veterans Community Project site on North Grand, where the sailors helped build tiny homes intended for veterans experiencing homelessness. Project leaders said the St. Louis site has 20 completed tiny homes, with nine currently occupied, and 16 additional units under construction.

Project staff described the initiative as a transitional housing model paired with services intended to help veterans stabilize and move toward longer-term housing.

The volunteer build placed active-duty sailors alongside civilian staff and local partners, reflecting a broader approach used by many housing nonprofits: supplementing skilled labor with community workdays to accelerate construction and maintain public engagement.

What the ship is, and what its recent deployments have involved

The USS St. Louis is a littoral combat ship (LCS), a class of fast, maneuverable Navy surface combatants designed for operations closer to shore, including in shallow-water environments. The ship was commissioned in 2020 and has completed two deployments over the past two years.

Crew members said a recent deployment included counter-illicit trafficking operations focused on interdicting drug-smuggling routes from parts of South and Central America toward the United States. Those missions typically involve multi-agency coordination and at-sea boardings, with ships and aircraft used to detect, track and stop suspected trafficking vessels.

Student engagement, scholarships, and a City Hall proclamation

Beyond the construction site, sailors also spoke with high school students about Navy career paths and STEM-related fields. During a visit to Saint Joseph Academy, three female students received ROTC scholarships and a fourth was selected to attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

The visit also included a stop at St. Louis City Hall, where Mayor Cara Spencer issued a proclamation designating the week as “USS St. Louis Week.”

Community itinerary continues

  • Volunteer work supporting the Veterans Community Project tiny-home build
  • Educational outreach focused on Navy careers and STEM opportunities
  • Civic engagement through meetings and a formal city proclamation
  • A scheduled appearance at a St. Louis Blues hockey game during the visit

The namesake trip ties together public service and institutional outreach, while highlighting ongoing local efforts to expand transitional housing options for veterans in St. Louis.
