St. Louis Police Investigate Death of 54-Year-Old Detainee After Medical Emergency at City Justice Center

St. Louis police are investigating the death of a man who died while being held at the St. Louis City Justice Center, the city’s downtown detention facility. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department identified the detainee as James Earl Johnson, 54, and said his family has been notified.

Police said Force Investigations Unit detectives were contacted around 8 p.m. on Nov. 4, 2025, about the detainee’s death. The department described the incident as an apparent medical emergency. Medical personnel responded and attempted life-saving measures before Johnson was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

At the time of the initial update, police said there were no obvious signs of trauma and described the inquiry as being in its early stages.
