Winter storm and extreme cold set the tone for the next week

A prolonged stretch of winter weather is expected across the St. Louis region, with the most disruptive period concentrated over the weekend. Forecast details indicate a combination of accumulating snow, very low temperatures and dangerous wind chills, followed by a slow return toward seasonal conditions during the first half of next week.

Most impactful window: Saturday through Sunday afternoon

Current projections point to snow developing Saturday, increasing in coverage and intensity Saturday night, and continuing into Sunday before tapering later Sunday. The overnight period Saturday into Sunday is expected to be the peak for snowfall rates, with the potential for heavy snow at times.

Across the city forecast area, expected new snowfall is broken into several rounds: 1 to 2 inches possible Saturday after noon, followed by 3 to 5 inches Saturday night, and another 2 to 4 inches Sunday. Taken together, that places the weekend storm total in a range that can materially affect transportation and public safety, especially given the concurrent cold.

Key hazards expected through the weekend: accumulating snow, periods of heavy snowfall, and wind chills dropping well below zero.

Cold weather risks will extend beyond the snowfall

Temperatures are forecast to remain in the teens through Sunday and Monday, limiting melting and increasing the likelihood that snow and ice persist on untreated roads, sidewalks and parking lots. Overnight lows are expected to fall to around 1°F Sunday night, then remain near the single digits early next week.

Wind will compound the cold. Forecast data shows wind chill values around -15°F during the day Saturday, with breezy conditions continuing Sunday, including gusts that may reach the 20 mph range. The combination raises the risk of frostbite for exposed skin and increases the danger for anyone stranded outdoors or in vehicles during the storm period.

Midweek shift: clearer skies and temperatures trending upward

After the storm exits, conditions are expected to stabilize. Monday is forecast to be mostly sunny but still cold, and by Tuesday the region should see a more noticeable warmup, with highs reaching the lower 30s. The outlook for Wednesday and Thursday keeps daytime highs generally in the 20s, suggesting that the post-storm thaw will be limited and uneven.

What residents should watch for

  • Timing of the heaviest snow Saturday night into Sunday, when travel impacts are most likely.

  • Wind chill values below zero, which can accelerate cold-weather injury risk.

  • Lingering slick surfaces into early next week due to low daytime temperatures.

Forecasts can shift in storm-track-dependent events, and small changes in temperature or precipitation rate may alter totals and the locations of the worst road conditions.
