Significant Ramp Closures on I-55 and Bridge Work on I-270 to Delay Monday Commute

Major Arteries Face Significant Lane and Ramp Closures
Commuters in the St. Louis region should prepare for a challenging start to the work week this Monday, February 2, 2026. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has several major infrastructure projects reaching critical phases that will impact traffic flow, particularly on the I-55 and I-270 corridors. Heavy congestion is expected during peak morning and evening hours.
I-55 Corridor Congestion
Ongoing improvements along Interstate 55 continue to cause major disruptions in South St. Louis City and South County. Drivers should expect the following permanent and long-term closures that are scheduled to remain in place through early 2026:
- Southbound I-55: One lane is currently closed from I-44 to north of Bates, with an additional restriction reducing the highway to just two lanes from north of Bates to north of Weber.
- Northbound I-55: Traffic is restricted to one lane from north of Reavis Barracks to north of Bayless, and two lanes from north of Bayless to Virginia Avenue.
- Ramp Closures: Multiple key access points remain closed to traffic, including the Virginia on-ramp to southbound I-55, the ramp from southbound I-55 to Loughborough, and the Loughborough on-ramp to southbound I-55. Additionally, the ramps at Lafayette/Truman and Germania remain closed for both northbound and southbound commuters.
I-270 and Bridge Work Updates
Work on the northern and western stretches of I-270 remains a high priority. In St. Louis County, the westbound exit and on-ramps at Riverview Drive are closed as part of the ongoing interchange reconstruction and Chain of Rocks Bridge replacement project. While some weekend lane restrictions recently wrapped up, the broader construction zone remains active with significant equipment movement.
In West County, motorists will encounter delays near the I-64 interchange. Crews are actively working on the replacement of the I-270 bridge over Conway Road and widening the driving surface over Ladue Road. These projects are scheduled to persist through the summer months of 2026, and drivers should be alert for shifting lane configurations near these work zones.
Winter Maintenance and General Road Conditions
Following a winter storm that impacted the region over the weekend, MoDOT crews are spending Monday morning clearing snow and ice from highway shoulders and ramps. While main travel lanes are largely clear, motorists are urged to give maintenance equipment plenty of room to operate. Pothole patching and brush cutting are also scheduled for various locations across the metro area as weather permits, which may result in intermittent lane flagging.
Commuter Advice
Metro Transit riders are encouraged to check the Transit app for real-time updates, as some bus routes may still be utilizing snow routes depending on local side-street conditions. For those driving, checking the Gateway Guide before departure is highly recommended to identify real-time bottlenecking caused by the I-55 lane reductions. Plan for an additional 15 to 20 minutes for cross-town commutes this morning.
