Public Health Advisory: Seasonal Influenza Activity

The City of St. Louis Department of Health has issued a continuing advisory as the region moves through the peak of the respiratory virus season. Surveillance data indicates that while Influenza A dominated earlier in the winter, there is currently a significant surge in Influenza B cases across the metropolitan area. Health officials report that emergency department visits for influenza-like illnesses remain above the seasonal average.

Residents are urged to practice preventive measures, including frequent handwashing and staying home if a fever develops. The Department of Health continues to recommend vaccination for those who have not yet received a seasonal flu shot.

Infrastructure and Street Department Updates

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and the City Street Department have announced several active work zones and service updates impacting commuters this week:

  • I-55 Construction: Significant lane closures remain in effect on I-55. Southbound traffic is restricted to one lane from I-44 to north of Bates and two lanes from north of Bates to north of Weber. These closures are expected to persist through early 2026. Additionally, the Virginia Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-55 remains closed for long-term bridge work.
  • Brickline Greenway: Construction continues on the north connector of the Brickline Greenway along Grand Boulevard. Commuters should expect intermittent lane shifts and sidewalk closures between Fairground Park and Page Avenue.
  • Refuse Collection: The Refuse Division reminds residents that curbside yard waste collection is currently on a seasonal hiatus. Regularly scheduled collection for yard waste is slated to resume on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

Public Safety and Emergency Management

Following Severe Weather Awareness Week, the City Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) reminds all citizens that the transition into spring brings an increased risk of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. Residents are encouraged to review their emergency plans and ensure they have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. Ongoing recovery efforts continue in areas affected by the May 2025 tornado, with resources still available for residents seeking infrastructure repair assistance.
