Presidents' Day Traffic and Transit Outlook

As St. Louis marks Presidents' Day today, Monday, February 16, 2026, commuters can expect a lighter overall volume of traffic due to the federal holiday. However, despite the lower number of vehicles on the road, significant MoDOT construction projects and specific lane closures across the city and county will still impact travel times for those heading to work or holiday events.

Major Highway Closures and Roadworks

Several arterial routes are facing scheduled work today that requires lane restrictions. The most notable impact for the city commute involves Interstate 44. Drivers should plan for delays on eastbound I-44 in St. Louis City, where two lanes will be closed between Kingshighway and Jefferson Avenue from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for pavement repairs.

On the I-55 corridor, several long-term and immediate projects are active:

  • In St. Louis City, one southbound lane is closed from I-44 to north of Bates, and two southbound lanes are restricted from north of Bates to Weber as bridge rehabilitation continues.
  • The ramps from southbound I-55 to Loughborough, and the Loughborough on-ramp to southbound I-55, remain closed as part of the multi-year bridge project.
  • In Jefferson County, motorists should prepare for a late-evening closure. The northbound US Route 67 loop ramp to northbound I-55 is scheduled to close at 9:00 p.m. tonight and will remain closed until 4:00 a.m. Tuesday.

There is positive news for North County drivers: the major interchange work at Route D (Page Ave.) and Route 67 (Lindbergh Blvd.), which saw a full closure over the weekend, is scheduled to reopen its main lanes and ramps by 5:00 a.m. this morning. While the roadway is open, expect shifted traffic patterns as crews continue bridge demolition and surface work in the area.

Interstate 270 and I-64 Lane Shifts

In West St. Louis County, bridge replacement work continues on I-270 near the I-64 interchange. Specifically, work on the bridges over Conway Road and Ladue Road is resulting in shifted lanes and narrowed shoulders. While all lanes typically remain open during peak holiday hours, the narrow lanes have led to increased congestion near Mercy Hospital, so extra caution is advised.

Metro Transit and Public Transport

For those utilizing public transportation, Metro Transit has confirmed that both MetroLink and MetroBus will operate on a regular Weekday schedule today, Monday, February 16. Unlike some federal holidays that trigger a weekend schedule, transit riders can expect full service. However, the Metro Transit Sales Office and some administrative customer service lines may be closed or operating with limited hours in observance of the holiday.

Commuter Recommendations

While the holiday may offer a smoother drive than a typical Monday, the mid-day lane closures on eastbound I-44 are likely to cause backups starting around 10:00 a.m. If your route includes the I-55 corridor or the I-44/Kingshighway area, consider using local streets or allowing an additional 15 minutes of travel time. Always keep an eye out for work crews, particularly in the active zones on I-270 and the I-55 corridor where lane configurations have changed recently.
