Official Roundup: City Council Updates, Weather Alerts, and Public Health Advisories

City Council and Legislative Updates
The St. Louis Board of Aldermen is scheduled to convene for its regular full board meeting today, Friday, January 30, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the City Hall Chambers, Room 230. A primary focus of today’s session is the introduction and first reading of Board Bill 131. This ordinance, sponsored by Alderwoman Jami Cox Antwi, concerns an amendment to the cooperation agreement between the City of St. Louis, the Gateway Foundation, and Terrace View Inc. regarding the Urban Garden within the Gateway Mall. Residents are reminded that while full board meetings are open for public viewing from the gallery, no public testimony is accepted during these sessions.
Extreme Weather and Emergency Services
The Department of Human Services has officially extended the Code Blue Level 4 activation through the morning of Friday, January 30. This emergency measure ensures that over 600 seasonal shelter beds remain available to support the city's unhoused population during the current stretch of frigid temperatures. Transportation to these facilities is available daily between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at designated rally points. Residents seeking shelter or needing to report a person in need of assistance should contact the United Way 211 helpline immediately.
Furthermore, the local State of Emergency declared by Mayor Cara Spencer remains active through February 22. This declaration was issued to provide the city with enhanced tools for winter storm recovery, including emergency procurement authority and the coordination of mutual aid. While major thoroughfares are largely clear, the city continues to monitor secondary and residential routes for ice patches and safe passage.
Public Health Advisory
The City of St. Louis Department of Health has issued an active advisory following a significant spike in influenza cases, predominantly the Influenza A strain. Health officials report that emergency department visits for influenza-like illnesses reached their highest seasonal levels in late January. The Department of Health strongly recommends that all residents who have not yet received a flu vaccine do so as soon as possible. High-risk individuals, including those over age 65 and individuals with chronic respiratory conditions, are urged to limit time in crowded indoor spaces and monitor for symptoms such as shivering, confusion, or extreme fatigue.
Infrastructure and Traffic Notices
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is continuing its post-storm maintenance, focusing on clearing snow and ice from highway ramps and shoulders today. Motorists are cautioned to expect minor delays and to provide ample space for maintenance vehicles. Additionally, several long-term infrastructure projects continue to affect traffic flow:
- I-55 Southbound: Single-lane closures persist from I-44 to north of Bates.
- I-55 Northbound: Lane restrictions remain in place from Reavis Barracks to Virginia Avenue.
- Ramp Closures: The Virginia Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-55 and the Germania ramps remain closed through early 2026 for ongoing bridge work.
Normal trash collection services have resumed citywide following earlier winter weather delays. Residents are encouraged to place bins at their regular collection points according to the standard Friday schedule.
