Major Lane Closures on Westbound I-44 and Scheduled Overnight Shutdown for I-55

Morning Commute Alert: Westbound I-44 Delays

Commuters heading toward West County or the Central West End should prepare for significant congestion this morning on westbound I-44. Starting at 3:00 a.m. and continuing through 2:00 p.m. today, Friday, February 27, crews have closed two westbound lanes between Grand Boulevard and Kingshighway Boulevard. This work is expected to create heavy backups during the morning rush hour, particularly for those merging from the downtown area and I-55/I-44 interchange.

Overnight Full Closure on Southbound I-55

Drivers in South County and Jefferson County need to plan for a complete closure of southbound I-55 tonight. Beginning at 11:00 p.m. and lasting until 5:00 a.m. Saturday, all southbound lanes will be closed at Route M (Exit 185). This closure is necessary for concrete pouring on the new bridge over the BNSF railroad as part of the ongoing I-55 Corridor Upgrade project. A signed detour will be in place: motorists will be directed to exit at Route M, turn left, follow U.S. 61/67 south to Route Z, and then re-enter the interstate.

Ongoing Construction in St. Louis City

Interstate 55 remains a primary construction zone within the city limits. One southbound lane is closed from I-44 to north of Bates, with two lanes restricted from north of Bates to north of Weber. Northbound travelers are also facing restrictions, including two lanes closed from north of Bayless to Virginia Avenue. Additionally, the following ramps remain closed through early 2026:

  • The Virginia Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-55.
  • The ramp from southbound I-55 to Loughborough Avenue.
  • The Germania Avenue on-ramp to northbound I-55.
  • The Lafayette/Truman ramp to southbound I-55.

Surface Street Impacts: Routes 21, 100, and 366

Local commuters should also watch for daytime maintenance and resurfacing projects on major state routes:

  • Route 21 (Gravois): One northbound and one southbound lane will be closed between Green Park and Gravois from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Route 100 (Manchester): A westbound lane will be closed between Weidman Road and Knollhaven Road from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Route 366 (Watson): Expect single-lane closures in both directions between Grant and Laclede Station Road from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Public Transit and Alternate Routes

Metro Transit reports that all MetroBus and MetroLink services are operating on normal schedules, though minor delays may occur in areas with heavy road construction. Transit users are encouraged to allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes for transfers. For those traveling to North County, remember that the westbound exit and on-ramps at I-270 and Riverview Drive remain closed for bridge replacement work; use the Bellefontaine Road interchange as an alternate.
