Sunday Commute Overview

Commuters and visitors in the St. Louis region should prepare for significant traffic pattern changes and increased passenger volumes this Sunday, February 8, 2026. While Sunday mornings typically see lighter traffic, major infrastructure projects on I-270 and I-55, combined with a high-profile sporting event downtown, will require extra travel time and attention to new road configurations.

Major Lane Shifts on Northbound I-270

Drivers using northbound Interstate 270 near the I-64 interchange will encounter a new traffic configuration that went into effect over the weekend. To accommodate bridge renovations, three northbound lanes have been shifted to the left. This allows crews to safely work on the right side of the interstate as part of the ongoing project to widen the bridge over Ladue Road and renovate the span over Conway Road.

Additionally, Conway Road remains completely closed to all traffic under I-270. This closure, which began Friday night for overhead bridge removals, is scheduled to remain in place until 5 a.m. Monday morning. Motorists who typically use Conway Road should utilize alternate east-west routes such as Ladue or Clayton Road.

Ongoing Bridge Rehabilitation on I-55

The multi-year I-55 bridge rehabilitation project continues to impact travel in South St. Louis City and County. This Sunday, motorists should be aware of the following persistent closures and restrictions:

  • The ramp from Germania Avenue to northbound I-55 remains closed for reconstruction.
  • On I-55 between I-44 and the city limits, expect narrowed lanes and occasional shoulder closures as crews finalize bridge painting and resurfacing prep work.
  • In Jefferson County, the I-55 corridor widening project has moved traffic onto newly constructed median pavement between Pevely and Festus. Speed limits are strictly enforced through this eight-mile work zone.

Public Transport and Special Events

Metro Transit is expecting a significant surge in ridership today as the 2026 U.S. Figure Skating Championships conclude at the Enterprise Center. Extra security and staff have been deployed across the MetroLink system to assist the thousands of fans traveling to the final qualifying rounds for the U.S. Olympic Team.

While the recent evening single-tracking operations near Union Station were scheduled to conclude Saturday night, passengers should still check for minor residual delays as the system returns to a standard Sunday schedule. Transit officials recommend that those heading downtown for the championships use the Civic Center Transit Center for the most direct access to the venue.

Commuter Recommendations

If you are traveling through the I-270/I-64 interchange, maintain a steady speed and avoid sudden lane changes, as the new shifts may catch some drivers by surprise. For those using public transit, purchasing fares in advance via mobile apps is highly recommended to avoid long lines at ticket vending machines during the figure skating peak hours.
