I-55 Lane Reductions and Downtown Event Traffic Headline Sunday Commute

Sunday Traffic Overview
For St. Louis commuters and visitors heading out this Sunday, February 1, 2026, the primary obstacles remain the significant long-term rehabilitation projects on our major interstates. While Sunday morning traffic typically remains light, several ongoing lane reductions and ramp closures in South City and North County will cause localized bottlenecks. Additionally, heavy attendance at downtown events today will likely lead to congestion near the America’s Center and the Fabulous Fox Theatre.
Major Construction on I-55
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) continues its multi-year overhaul of the I-55 corridor. Drivers should prepare for the following constraints:
- Southbound I-55: Expect a single-lane closure from I-44 down to north of Bates Street. The bottleneck tightens further south, with two lanes closed from north of Bates to north of Weber Road.
- Northbound I-55: Similar restrictions apply heading toward the city, with one lane closed from Reavis Barracks to Bayless, and two lanes closed between Bayless and Virginia Avenue.
- Ramp Closures: The Virginia Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-55 remains closed. Furthermore, both the southbound exit and on-ramps at Loughborough Avenue are blocked, as are the ramps connecting Germania to the interstate in both directions.
I-270 and North County Alerts
In North County, work on the I-270 corridor and the Chain of Rocks bridge replacement continues to impact local exits. The westbound exit ramp to Riverview Drive is currently closed, as is the on-ramp from Riverview Drive to westbound I-270. Motorists are encouraged to use Lindbergh Boulevard (Route 67) as an alternative, though keep in mind that Route 67 itself is down to one lane in both directions near the Page Boulevard (Route D) intersection for safety improvements.
Downtown and Midtown Event Congestion
Traffic will be notably heavier in the central corridor due to high-profile events. The 2026 STL RV Travel Show concludes its run today at the America’s Center and The Dome, which will bring significant pedestrian and vehicle traffic to the Convention Plaza area. In Midtown, the Fabulous Fox Theatre is hosting performances of "Hell's Kitchen - The Musical," with matinee and evening shows expected to crowd Washington Avenue and Grand Boulevard. Powell Symphony Hall is also hosting "The Wizard of Oz in Concert," adding to the volume in the Grand Center Arts District.
Public Transit and MetroLink
Metro Transit reports that MetroLink is operating on its standard weekend schedule. While the University City-Big Bend station has successfully reopened following recent infrastructure upgrades, riders should still remain alert for local MetroBus detours near the I-55 construction zones. If you are planning to attend the downtown shows, MetroLink remains a reliable alternative to avoid the search for event parking.
