I-270 Lane Shifts and I-55 Bridge Work Headlining Thursday Commute

Morning Commute Overview for Thursday, February 5, 2026
Commuters in the St. Louis metropolitan area should prepare for significant changes on major arteries today. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has accelerated several projects, specifically affecting the Interstate 270 corridor. While most morning commutes remain steady, drivers should be alert for new traffic patterns resulting from overnight shifts and ongoing bridge rehabilitation projects.
Major Highway Alerts: I-270 and I-55
The most notable change today involves Interstate 270. MoDOT crews have accelerated the northbound lane shift near the I-64 interchange to today, Thursday, February 5. Drivers who use this stretch should be aware that lane configurations have changed to accommodate bridge work. Additionally, starting at 8:00 p.m. tonight, up to two additional northbound lanes of I-270 near I-64 will close for barrier wall removal and restriping. These lanes are expected to reopen by 5:00 a.m. Friday morning.
On Interstate 55, long-term bridge rehabilitation continues to impact traffic flow in both South City and South County. Current restrictions include:
- One southbound lane closed from I-44 to north of Bates, with two lanes closed from north of Bates to Weber Road.
- One northbound lane closed from north of Reavis Barracks to north of Bayless, with two lanes closed from north of Bayless to Virginia Avenue.
- The Virginia Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-55 remains closed through early 2026.
- The ramps connecting southbound I-55 to Loughborough Avenue and Germania Avenue are currently closed.
Secondary Road and Local Route Closures
Several state routes in St. Louis County are undergoing maintenance today. Commuters should expect delays on the following routes:
- Route 21 (Tesson Ferry Rd): One lane will be closed in both directions between Green Park and Gravois, and between Walden Ridge and Baptist Church from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- Route 100 (Manchester Rd): A 24-hour closure is in effect for one eastbound lane between Pointe Drive and Des Peres Road, as well as between Mason Lane and Barrett Station Road.
- Route 366 (Watson Rd): One lane is closed in both directions between Grant and Laclede Station Road until 3:00 p.m. today.
Public Transit and Metro Transit Updates
Metro Transit reports that the MetroLink system is operating on a normal weekday schedule. Following the successful reopening of the University City-Big Bend station earlier this year, all major rail lines are servicing their respective stations. Commuters using MetroBus should check for minor schedule adjustments intended to improve on-time performance, but no major detours are reported for the Thursday morning peak.
Commuter Advice
With temperatures warming slightly, MoDOT has increased the pace of roadwork. Motorists are encouraged to use the Gateway Guide for real-time camera feeds and to maintain a safe following distance when approaching the new lane shifts on I-270.
