Hazardous Conditions and Significant Lane Closures Expected for Monday Morning Commute

Extreme Cold and Hazardous Travel Warnings in Effect
Commuters in St. Louis face a challenging start to the work week this Monday, January 26, 2026. Following a weekend of wintry weather, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and the State of Missouri have implemented the Hazardous Travel Policy (SP-09) for the entire region, including Troop C. With temperatures hovering between 2°F and 17°F and wind chills reaching as low as -10°F, officials are urging residents to exercise extreme caution on all area roadways. The City of St. Louis has also announced that city offices will be closed today for non-essential operations to allow crews to prioritize snow removal and emergency response.
Major Roadworks and Arterial Lane Closures
Despite the weather conditions, several planned roadworks projects are impacting major arteries. Commuters should expect significant delays on the following routes:
I-44 Eastbound
Two eastbound lanes will be closed between Hampton and Grand from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for maintenance work.Route 21 (St. Louis County)
Expect single-lane closures in both directions between Green Park and Gravois, as well as between Walden Ridge and Baptist Church, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.Route 30 (Gravois Road)
One lane will be closed in both the eastbound and westbound directions between Route 141 and Seibert Avenue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.Route 370
Maintenance crews have scheduled a lane closure eastbound between St. Louis Mills and I-270 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Heavy delays are expected near the Missouri River bridge.Ongoing I-55 Reconstruction
Long-term work continues on I-55, with lane closures remaining in effect from I-44 to north of Weber and from Reavis Barracks to Virginia. Ramps at Virginia, Loughborough, and Germania remain closed as part of the multi-year improvement project.
Metro Transit and Public Transport Alerts
Metro Transit is monitoring road conditions closely. While MetroLink is attempting to maintain regular schedules, riders should expect 10-20 minute delays on both the Red and Blue lines due to the extreme cold affecting track switches and infrastructure. The Transit Access Center is operating by phone only today; in-person reduced fare permit processing is currently suspended. For those using MetroBus, several routes remain on snow detours, and commuters are encouraged to use the Transit app for real-time bus locations before heading to their stops.
Commuter Safety Recommendations
MoDOT asks all drivers to slow down and provide ample space for snowplows and emergency vehicles. Given the record-low temperatures, ensure your vehicle is equipped with an emergency kit and has a full tank of gas. If your commute is not essential, officials recommend staying off the roads until conditions improve later this afternoon.
