East Alton Irwin Street house fire injures two; one airlifted to St. Louis hospital Sunday afternoon

Fire crews find heavy smoke and flames; multiple departments called in
Two people were injured Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026, after a house fire in the 100 block of Irwin Street in East Alton, Illinois, prompted a large emergency response and left a residence heavily damaged.
Firefighters arriving at the scene found heavy smoke and flames throughout the home. As conditions escalated, the response was expanded in stages to bring in additional personnel and equipment, including mutual aid from neighboring departments.
One victim treated for burns, transported by helicopter to St. Louis
Fire crews located one victim inside the residence. The person was reported to have sustained burn injuries, and a helicopter was requested to transport the patient to a hospital in St. Louis for further treatment. A second victim was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.
Emergency managers also dispatched a rehabilitation unit to support crews working on scene, a standard measure during extended operations to help manage firefighter fatigue, hydration, and medical monitoring.
Mutual aid response and wind complicate operations
Assisting departments responded from across the immediate area, including Wood River, Alton, Godfrey, Rosewood Heights, Roxana, and Bethalto. Officials said strong winds made firefighting more difficult, increasing the challenge of controlling heat and smoke conditions and managing the risk of fire spread.
Crews were able to bring the fire under control before it extended to a neighboring home, limiting damage beyond the involved structure.
