St. Louis generates sustained pressure, but Charlotte’s finishing and goalkeeping secure an opening-week point

St. Louis CITY SC and Charlotte FC opened the 2026 Major League Soccer regular season Saturday, February 21, with a 1-1 draw at Energizer Park. St. Louis midfielder Marcel Hartel put the home side ahead in the 60th minute before Charlotte midfielder Pep Biel equalized in the 73rd, leaving both clubs with a point to begin the campaign.

The first half ended scoreless as St. Louis produced the clearer chances and spent longer spells in advanced areas, while Charlotte’s attacking phases were more intermittent. After the break, St. Louis turned territorial control into a breakthrough when Simon Becher’s pass created space inside the box and Hartel finished from the left side to make it 1-0.

Charlotte responded with a direct sequence that cut through St. Louis’ defensive line. Wilfried Zaha played a through ball into Biel’s path, and Biel finished from the left side of the area to level the match at 1-1.

Numbers underline a familiar early-season tradeoff: chance creation versus conversion

St. Louis ended the match with a wide advantage in shot volume and the more frequent final-third entries, but the margin did not translate into a winning goal. St. Louis recorded 22 shots to Charlotte’s nine and held an 11-3 edge in shots on target, while also finishing ahead on expected goals (1.9 to 0.6). Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina was a central figure in that outcome, credited with 10 saves, including multiple stops late as St. Louis pushed for a winner.

The match also opened a new regular-season chapter for St. Louis after an offseason of change. The club entered 2026 with Yoann Damet taking charge and Corey Wray in place as sporting director. Charlotte arrived for the opener following a 2025 season in which it finished fourth in the Eastern Conference, bringing an attack led by Zaha and Biel that showed it can produce equalizers even when chasing the game.

What the draw means heading into Week 2

  • St. Louis remained unbeaten in its first four MLS season-opening matches.
  • Hartel’s goal set an early standard for St. Louis’ ability to create chances through combination play in the box.
  • Charlotte left St. Louis with evidence that its transition passing can decide moments, even in matches where it sees fewer sustained attacks.

Final: St. Louis CITY SC 1, Charlotte FC 1 — Hartel (60’), Biel (73’).

Both teams now turn to their next fixtures with positives and clear areas for refinement: St. Louis with the volume of chances it generated, and Charlotte with the resilience and defensive execution required to earn a road point on opening day.
