Fatal fire reported Monday afternoon north of Duluth

Investigators recovered a man’s body Monday evening after a structure fire destroyed a pole building in Gnesen Township, in Minnesota’s St. Louis County. Authorities said emergency crews were dispatched shortly after 1 p.m. on Jan. 19, 2026, to a report of a pole barn fully engulfed in flames on the 6700 block of Rice Lake Road.

When firefighters and law enforcement arrived, the building was already consumed by fire, and rescue efforts could not be undertaken because of extreme conditions at the scene. Authorities also reported that one person was unaccounted for and was believed to be inside the structure at the time the fire broke out.

Body located hours later; identity not immediately released

After the fire was brought under control, investigators located a body at the scene around 8 p.m. Monday. The individual was believed to be a 76-year-old man from Duluth. Authorities said the person’s name was being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

As the response continued into the evening, officials indicated that personnel also checked other locations where the missing individual was known to spend time, reflecting the uncertainty early in the incident about whether the person was in the building at the moment the fire intensified.

Multiple agencies involved in determining cause and circumstances

The incident remains under investigation, with state and local authorities involved. The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting, alongside the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. A regional medical examiner’s office is also participating in the effort to confirm identity and establish cause and manner of death.

Officials have not released an origin or cause for the fire, and no public timeline has been provided for investigative findings. The destroyed structure was described as a pole building, a type of outbuilding commonly used for storage, workshops, or agricultural purposes.

  • Location: 6700 block of Rice Lake Road, Gnesen Township (St. Louis County, Minnesota)

  • Initial dispatch: Around 1 p.m., Jan. 19, 2026

  • Body recovered: Around 8 p.m. the same day

  • Victim: Believed to be a 76-year-old Duluth man; identity pending confirmation

Authorities said rescue operations were not possible when crews arrived because the structure was fully engulfed and conditions were extreme.

Officials have not announced whether any injuries were reported among responders, nor have they indicated whether the building was occupied for residential purposes. The investigation is expected to focus on reconstructing the fire’s origin, verifying who was inside the structure, and determining the events leading up to the blaze.
